The New World by Patrick Ness
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
This was really a letdown, but hey, it was free.
This is a quick prequel about Viola and her parents landing in the New World. There's an alternating point of view between Viola on the main settler's ship and Viola with her parents on the scouting ship about to land. She has a few interactions with friends, teachers, and of course her parents, but nothing that really built her character. Actually, she was rather pouty and unadventurous, not wanting to join her parents on the scouting mission because she's afraid of what their future in the New World holds. That does give some groundwork for the dramatic character development that picks up in The Knife of Never Letting Go.
Short and rather unexciting, but it does give extra emotion to her parents' death in Knife, and of course an extra 25 pages of this series couldn't be a bad thing!
